14th Gay Man Attacked in Dallas Gayborhood

A 54-year-old man is the latest victim in a spree of violent crimes targeting gay men in a Dallas-area gayborhood, local news station WFAA reports.

The most recent incident marks the 14th gay man attacked in Oak Lawn since September. The unnamed victim was pushed and kicked while his assailants hurled gay slurs at him. Authorities are calling the attack, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, a hate crime. The victim said his attackers were two six-foot-tall white men. Police have not identified anyone in the attack.

Dallas police Assistant Chief Randall Blankenbaker told WFAA the incident took place in the parking lot of the Round-Up Saloon, a local gay bar. He also said the attackers took the victim's belongings during the attack.

"At least one of the suspects used offensive language in reference to the victim's perceived sexual orientation," the police spokesman said.

A number of victims who were attacked in Oak Lawn recounted similar beatings, which involved the use of gay slurs and robbery.

Earlier this month, police booked two African-American teens for a robbery involving a woman near the Dallas gayborhood. Authorities initially believe the men were connected to the Oak Lawn attacks but their involvement became unclear as the attacks continued while in custody.

"The offenses were committed by one black male, by two black males, by three black males, by three Latin males, by two white males, by unknown description males, by a black male and Latin female," Blankenbaker told WFAA.
