NYC Trans Man: Whole Foods Coworkers Called Me 'She, Her or It'

A transgender man, who worked at a Whole Foods in New York City, filed a lawsuit against the supermarket Saturday and says his coworkers humiliated him by calling him "she, her, or it," the New York Post reports.

Victor Alexander King, 21, filed the suit in Manhattan federal court, claiming his supervisors at the Chelsea location discriminated against him with transphobic language.

"I know you are not a guy, I am not going to refer to you as a guy," one of King's coworkers, Quadry Scott, allegedly told him.

The Post reports King's supervisors went through sensitivity training but that allegedly didn't stop the transphobic language. King said he was forced to quit his job in March.

According to a report from Fusion, King worked at Whole Foods for six months and his complaints about his situation were ignored by the company.

"After all, if the Whole Foods in Chelsea was this hostile, why would any other be more inviting?" King's suit reads, according to Fusion. "It is also a terrible solution to punish the only innocent person in order to avoid addressing the offending staff and managers."

A spokesperson for Whole Foods told Gothamist the company has yet to review the lawsuit.

"As a company, we have long celebrated diversity and acceptance and have zero tolerance for discrimination," Michael Sinatra said. "Our diverse and inclusive culture is reflected in our team member base, including our leadership, as well as in community partnerships here in New York City."
