After Outcry From Neighbors, NYC's Giant Pink Penis Gets Painted Over

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The saga of the 40 foot pop-up pink penis mural in New York City's Lower East Side is over. After outcry from neighbors the owner of the building where the phallic art was erected, had it painted over.

As previously reported, on Christmas Eve, a four-story, realistic pink penis was painted on the side of an apartment building in New York's Lower East Side. The pop-up penis is the work of Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt.

The art installation was commissioned by a street art foundation called The New Allen, which is run by a nearby Peruvian restaurant called Baby Brassa.

"I have never heard so much laughter and seen so many happy faces behind my back when painting as for today doing this wall on Broome Street," wrote the graffiti artist on Instagram on Sunday.

But not everyone was laughing.

As NBC News 4 New York reports, neither Falkholt nor The New Allen bothered to get permission from the owner of the building where the painting of the giant pink penis went up. After outcry over the piece made headlines on Wednesday morning, workers quickly put up scaffolding. By 4:30 p.m., the pink penis was gray washed.

"As you know we work with several artists and try to bring street art for everyone to enjoy," read a statement released by The New Allen. "The last piece is definitely a very strong statement that we discussed with the artist but she had some pretty good points in order to make this piece," said the representative in the email.

As the saying goes, "take a picture, it will last longer." Although gone from the building, the giant pink penis lives forever on Instagram.
