Rodney Ross’ novel, "The Cool Part of His Pillow," is a funny, touching, beautifully written tale about a man of a certain age who tries to move on with his life after losing his partner in a tragic accident.

Andy and Barry, together for almost two decades, are the proud owners of GREAT ROOMS!, a successful interior design business storefront. On Barry’s 45th birthday, Andy and their two dogs, Gertie and Noel, are killed in an accident. Now alone for the first time in ages, a grief-stricken Barry tries to cope with the loss of his soul mate while maintaining his sanity as a son, brother, friend and entrepreneur.

Despite the support from his mother, Jeanie, his friend, Potsy, and his employee, Dee, Barry jets off to his vacation home in Key West after ceasing contact with most of the outside world. He soon learns that Florida isn’t the answer, so he sets a plan in motion to sell the business and relocates to New York. Since money is not a consideration from the generous accident settlement, he accepts a position at a souvenir shop on Broadway where he hopes his encyclopedic knowledge of theater will serve him well.

Ross has written Barry with a disposition that could easily be interpreted as catty or even callous, but underneath his seemingly bitchy exterior is a kindhearted man with a genuine concern for others. His thoughts and actions are a veritable hodgepodge of emotional highs and lows, as he is subjected to a timeline of unfamiliar events, such as hooking up for the first time online, attending a support group and dating a twink, that can be viewed as equally hilarious and heartbreaking.

Even those of us fortunate enough to have not lost someone significant will appreciate Barry’s emotional journey, and the author deserves particular praise for crafting a protagonist over the age of forty. "The Cool Part of His Pillow" features a colorful cast of characters, an original, engaging storyline and a narrator with incomparable wit.
