Green Golly And Her Golden Flute

The importance of exposing our children to the world of classical music always exists and will never go out of vogue. With the bombardment of today's music in everything they see, hear and do, it's important for future generations to make connections with the cultural past, and to develop (at the very least) an appreciation with the music of earlier times.

It is to that end that the team of writer and storyteller Keith Torgan, musician Barbara Siesel, and illustrator Suzanne Langelier-Lebeda have collaborated to create the children's story, "Green Golly & her Golden Flute." The book, along with its Parents' Choice® Gold Award winning recording of the same name, is an opportunity to share quality time with our youngsters while exposing them the worlds of reading and classical music.

The materials are a high-quality combination of picture book and audio resources. If you wish to sit with your young child and take in a fun variation of the Rapunzel tale, drawn delightfully in a colorful, hardcover version, you can. However, it's recommended that you make the most of what the three artists have created, and use the CD (or you can easily download all the materials with your Smartphone or iPad using the StorySticker Codes in the back of the book) to listen to Siesel's gorgeous flute performances of the ten famous selections referred to in the story about an unconventional maiden trapped in a tower, as told by Torgan's quirky voices and narration. The audio component is a complete entity unto itself, so if the book is not handy, you can still enjoy the story with your young listener.

Langelier-Lebeda's drawings are fresh and fun. Siesel's playing is top notch, and allows for a relaxing listen even if you're not engaged in the storytelling aspect of the package. Full performances of each song, which includes works by Mendelssohn, Bizet, Copland, Schubert and Chopin, are additionally included as a nice set of instrumentals.
