Ft. Lauderdale GLFF Opens with "G.B.F."

Friday Oct 11, 2013

There will be a red carpet, opening night screening of "G.B.F." (Gay Best Friend), celebrity Q&A, and an after-party at the 5th Annual Ft. Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

"G.B.F." lead actor Michael J. Willett, whom the "Huffington Post" has called the "next break-out star" for his performance in the film, will be Opening Night's special guest and walk the red carpet to kick off the four-day festival. Following the screening of "G.B.F.", and a Q&A with the audience, Willett will mix and mingle with guests at the "G.B.F." Opening Night Party.

As a child, his first national commercial had him singing for Little Debbie's. Since then, Willett has starred opposite Mary Steenbergen and Amber Tamblyn in the CBS series "Joan of Arcadia," Poppy Montgomery in "Without a Trace" on CBS, and Denise Richards in "Blue Mountain State" on Spike TV. He has also managed to stay true to his theatre roots by originating roles in the LA Drama Critics awarded "Production of the Year," "Life Could Be a Dream," the YouTube hit "The Green Room," and the world premiere of "Summer of Love," for which his performance earned an LA Stage Scene Award.

Willett and his career were truly launched into high gear when he played "Lionel" in Showtime's Emmy and Golden Globe winning series "United States of Tara," where he caught the eye of creator Steven Spielberg.

As "Tanner," the lead character in "G.B.F.," Willett plays the role of an accidentally outed high school student who becomes the object of attention among three popular girls and prom queen wannabes who want to snare him as their Gay Best Friend. "G.B.F." has been called a cross between "Heathers," "Mean Girls" and "Clueless" from a gay point-of-view.

He has recently been cast in MTV's "Faking It."

The 5th Annual Ft. Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (FLGLFF) takes the stage Oct. 10 -13 at the newly remodeled Classic Gateway Theater. Featuring a dynamic lineup of feature films, documentaries and short films, the FLGLFF will include 37 films from 10 countries, many of which are South Florida premieres. The chosen screenings run the cinematic gamut from comedies to dramas to documentaries and include both feature-length and short films.
