The old horror movie adage of getting killed after having sex takes on a unique twist in the new IFC Films DVD "Contracted." At once a cautionary tale and splatter flick rolled into one, this intriguing independent feature gives jaded horror fans new hope with a nail-biting experience.
Lesbian Samantha (the talented Najarra Townsend) takes a break from women and drunkenly sleeps with a man for the first time in years. After experiencing what she thinks is a hangover, Samantha develops symptoms known only to STD's but she's actually turning into something much worse.
Perky horror veteran Caroline Williams ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2") appears briefly as Samantha's mom and has a key scene at the very end. Speaking of endings, it's too abrupt and here's hoping a sequel gets produced.
"Contracted" features the usual commonplace bonus features (behind the scenes, audio commentaries, trailers) found on most DVD's, with a couple of added treats. One of them is the animated pitch used by the filmmakers to sell their movie to studios. Featuring a 1950's animation style, the persuasive piece is as incomparable as the film itself.
The other feature of note is Townsend's audition and callback, proving she was the right candidate for the grueling role. An unorthodox approach to director Eric England's movie-making and writing gets examined in "The Making of Contracted."
At a price of about $25, "Contracted" seems a bit pricey for a DVD, so perhaps rent this one before adding it to your horror collection.
