The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

One of the most underrated and underappreciated movies hits home video shelves for audiences to discover. Based on the James Thurber two-page short story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is about a quiet, put-upon middle-aged guy who learns to actually "live" his life when he goes on a journey to find a missing film negative. Directed by and starring Ben Stiller and co-starring Kristen Wiig, this beautiful looking film is at times an over-the-top comedy, but mostly it's a gentle and reflective portrait of a man who opens himself up to new experiences, and in doing so learns to appreciate himself even when those around him might not be able to. It's a lovely film that sort of sneaks up on you at the end.

Special features are okay, but not the reason to buy the disc.

  • Deleted, Alternate, and Extended Scenes - There are a few scenes that add more to Mitty's fantasy life that are interesting and looked expensive to cut. There are 16 minutes of new footage in total.

  • Behind the Scenes featurettes include: The History of "Walter Mitty," The Look of 'Life', That's a Shark!, The Music of Walter Mitty, Icelandic Adventure, Nordic Casting, Titles of Walter Mitty, Sights and Sounds of Production which includes Skateboarding Through Iceland, Ted-Walter Fight, and a Pre-Viz featurette regarding the aforementioned Ted-Walter fight in the streets.
