South Beach On Heels
"South Beach on Heels" is an engrossing documentary about eight breathtaking Miami drag queens entertaining legions of fans in Miami's famed South Beach. Through the performers' own words, via interviews with their families and friends, and through candid footage, we get an intimate glimpse into the lives, careers, struggles, and triumphs of eight very unique individuals. And we get an inspirational story of how people can touch hearts and change lives through art, acceptance, and self-expression.
At the heart of the film are the eight queens profiled: Noel Leon, Tlo Ivy, Missy Meyakie LePaige, Tiffany Fantasia, Shanaya Bright, T.P. Lords, Vinna Rouge, and Latrice Royale, who was featured on season four of Logo's "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars." We also get to meet the men beneath the make-up, wigs, and elaborate costumes. Each one is unique. Each one is seen both in and out of drag. And each one has a riveting, touching story to share.
The documentary explores the eight performers as they discuss issues such as growing up, family (both biological and drag), fear, acceptance, approval, mortality, the high financial costs of drag (as one performer describes, "You can't pay the bills just looking like a cross dresser"), identity (including the differences between drag queens, cross dressers, transgender, and transvestite), dating, sex, and artistic expression.
The result is a compelling, enlightening, and touching exploration of a unique art form and its colorful performers. Much like most drag performances, "South Beach on Heels" is entertaining, touching, and funny. Quite simply, it is a film not to be missed.
