Now seems to be the right time for a spoof of the recent array of "exorcism" films, but sadly "Hellbenders" is neither funny nor appealing. The underrated actor Clifton Collins Jr. is the one bright spot in this odd mishmash of genres.
A collection of Brooklyn NY sinning priests known as the Hellbound Saints gather together to fight demons running amuck in NYC. Each priest has his own favorite sin, and this is supposed to aid them in sending the demons to hell. One such priest (Clancy Brown) says the word "cocksucker" incessantly. In fact, "Hellbenders" features so much swearing, it challenges any Quentin Tarantino film in the language department.
Unfortunately, "Hellbenders" changes tones so frequently throughout the course of the film that it'll make your head spin like Regan McNeil in the "Exorcist." It was also filmed in 3-D, and there's a 3-D version included here on the Blu-ray along with the standard version.
A decent amount of bonus material saves the Blu-ray from being a complete washout. "God's Dirty Work: The Making of Hellbenders" interviews director J.T. Petty, and he knows that people either love or hate his film. His audio commentary with fellow actors is amusing, too. "Fly on the Wall" shows the actors on-set as they're being filmed for key scenes.
A 40-minute special feature of original "exorcism" short films (used during the course of "Hellbenders") was made by horror fans and was submitted to Bloody-Disgusting.com. It seems we may have some future horror filmmakers, and this is definitely a bonus featurette to watch.
