Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical
In the continued pursuits of the estate of Theodore Geisel ("Dr. Seuss") to keep the works of the late author / illustrator relevant with the current generation of youngsters, they permitted the adaptation of his 1966 animated classic, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" into a Broadway musical.
The 2006 production entertained legions of new fans, and now Masterworks Broadway has finally brought the performers from the 2007 edition of the Broadway company into the studio to record the Timothy Mason (book and lyrics) and Mel Marvin (music) score in order to give myriads more of little "Who's" the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the tale of the evil Grinch and his dog Max, as the creature tries to take away Christmas from the docile people of Whoville.
The Grinch's chaos is embodied in actor Patrick Page, who drags the unwilling Max (Rusty Ross) through the Who's holiday season, stealing their gifts and trees, believing that his heinous act will ruin their Christmas. When the young Cindy-Lou Who brings doubt into the green guy's gullet with her unconditional caring for him, he begins to realize the true meaning of Christmas.
In the end, of course, all live happily ever after, but the vocal performances of Page, Ross and the always wonderful John Cullum as the narrator (and who gets to sing the iconic song, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"), "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical" maintains its engagement. Taking the original thirty minute cartoon and keeping the expansion and adding of musical numbers palpable lends its credit to Mason, Marvin, and Jack O'Brien, who conceived the production.
Bonus tracks include "Where Are You Christmas?" a James Horner / Will Jennings song culled from the 2000 film version that starred Jim Carrey in the title role. The CD should also give more exposure of the show to regional and community theaters as an alternative to having to endure another year of "Christmas Carol."
