It appears the trend now is to position artist and talent who have the potential to inspire with the depths of their music. The era of shallow, empty, sexed-up beats, may be coming to an end. That doesn’t mean that Aloe Blacc doesn’t deliver some engaging movement with his new album "Lift Your Spirit". There is enough to move the soul, and rally excitement...and the music is relevant.

For those of us who remember when lyrics mattered in music, and a song was made up of much more than just electronic manipulations; it was categorized by the content of its heart and soul, and that is exactly what Aloe Blacc has made so viable with his lyrically rich verses. The album’s signature track "Wake Me Up" is jubilant and telling. It has within it the fire to inspire the listener to live each day to the fullest. That would be the manifesto this singer/songwriter adheres to. Self-identity appears a prevalent thread living inside Spirit

"The Man", though simplistically produced and arranged easily, compromises the most eloquent expression of Blacc as an artist. The song appears a call to action, that is not only meant for his audience, but a definitive mantra to be followed and evoked -- Blacc is "the man" and he wants everyone to know it. The stylishly funky "Love Is the Answer" is prophetically sexy and reminiscent of many of his contemporaries who have explored similar jazzy funk in the genre. The track will have everyone grooving along. As will "Can You Do This", which is a showstopper in the making.

What makes Aloe Blacc stand out from everyone else on the charts is the density of his vocals, the severity and seriousness in which he evokes his melodies, and his hauntingly smoky emotion. This album is perhaps the most appropriately entitled of the season, for it will lift your spirit.
