British Soul Singer Sam Smith Comes Out
British singer-songwriter Sam Smith, who first made a name for himself as the vocalist behind the banger "Latch" by Disclosure, has come out after releasing a music video last week that raised questions by fans.
In the clip for his single "Leave Your Lover," Smith is caught in a love triangle between a man and a woman as he sings the lyrics, "Just leave your lover, leave him for me." At the end of the video, Smith watches on as the male actor canoodles with another guy at a restaurant.
After some speculated over his sexuality in the days after the video, Smith revealed in a new interview with the Fader that he is attracted to other men -- he does not use terms like "gay," "bisexual" or "queer," however.
"I've never been in a relationship before. I've only been in unrequited relationships where people haven't loved me back," Smith, 22, told the music magazine. "I guess I'm a little bit attracted to that in a bad way. 'In the Lonely Hour' is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back. I think I'm over it now, but I was in a very dark place.
I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn't felt love before," he added. " I've felt the bad things. And what's a more powerful emotion: pain or happiness?"
