Summer Horns

"Koz"mically in tune with the pulse, rhythm and heat as well as the transformation of smooth jazz, Dave Koz has taken the time to get the grooves just right by adding a certain sparkle and polished shine to his "Summer Horns." The "friends" chosen to perform on this new work and along for the ride on his 2013 summer soiree and playful romp across the U.S.A. are contemporary jazz saxophonists of skilled standing in their own right. Joining Dave for work and play are Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliot.

The selections chosen range from the jump and invigoration of "Got to Get You into My Life" or "Hot Fun in the Summertime" to beautiful and distinctively original takes on the "summertime" blues with "God Bless the Child" and "Take Five." The four players under the producing baton of Paul Brown create a stunning new spin-out in tribute and celebration of the mighty musical genius Dave Brubeck. Lord knows "Take Five" has been a jazz staple since Dave Koz was just picking up the sax.

"Summer Horns" also tackles and scores a successful interpretation of Herb Alpert's "Rise" while managing to steam a few windows up with the sultry tempo and style. Wait! Did I just swoon over Dave Koz? I think I did. It's been two years now since "Hello Tomorrow" and with summer blooming on the horizon, nothing beats the blast and class of a full-horn section.

As June is "bustin'" out all over, it's the right time to either chill or bust a move with a strong and solid groove of R&B, cool jazz, and hot jazz spun-up with a funk that is "no punk." Dave Koz with a "lot" of help from his friends... Mindi, Gerald and Richard strike red-hot all around and to bring forth another sun-lite selection on "Summer Horns" that is "so good!"
