The Bling Ring - Original Soundtrack
The job of a good movie soundtrack is to move along the film’s story, add coloring and texture to its cast of characters, and inspire moments of greatness that sit with the audience beyond the darkened walls of the movie house. In director Sofia Coppola’s latest screen offering, the film maker takes on the highly glamorized LA crime spree perpetuated by the infamous "Bling Ring" and "The Bling RIng" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a perfectly pitched package.
The film’s group of overly-entitled, Beverly Hills bandits and narcissist led by Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga stole from the rich and hallow - Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan - in an effort to become equally vacuous themselves, thereby grabbing for themselves the 15 minutes of fame guaranteed under the new social acceptability expected from infamy.
The various acts assembled for the soundtrack are equally as infamous today’s music standard. Reema Major serves up the label-ladened "Gucci Bag" which properly illustrates the fame and fortune obsession of the central characters. It’s all about "the fashion show" - that’s who we be, she says. Frank Ocean’s "Super Rich Kids" puts things into the very sad perspective - perhaps the illustrative result of a culture on the brink of collapse as depicted in the film - "Super rich kids with nothing but fake friends." - searching for a real love. If only.
With hip-hop confections like "Drop It Low" and the urban-house styling of rap’s Azalia Banks delivering a ferocious front on her hit single "212," the soundtrack doesn’t skimp on its adolescent sex appeal either. Even Rye Rye’s "Sunshine" comes off perfectly drug-inducing. Pop-culture’s ultimate over-indulgent egoist Kanye West is appropriately represented not once, but twice on the beautifully produced "All Of the Lights" and "Power" - the latter appropriately contemporary, while "Lights" wreaks of West Coast wonderment and the perversions of celebrity.
"The Bling Ring" is to the new millennium what "Less Than Zero" was to the 90’s. And how can we forget what the Bangles delivered with "Hazy Shade of Winter?" A soundtrack begets greatness when it enhances the movie. "The Bling Ring" Original Soundtrack is worth snatching up. Listen with abandon.
