Marry Me A Little - New Cast Recording

"Marry Me a Little" is one of several evenings of entertainment culled from the catalog of Stephen Sondheim. The Keen Company produced a revised version of the 1980 review this year, and Ghostlight Records has recorded the score featuring the fresh talents of Jason Tam ("Lysistrata Jones" and the highly anticipated musical from the creators of "Next to Normal" titled "If/Then") and Lauren Molina (the recent production of "Candide," and her band, The Skivvies).

The material included in this piece primarily encompasses pieces cut from "Follies," "Company" and "A Little Night Music," but director Jonathan Silverstein, in conjunction with original conceivers Craig Lucas and Norman René, have manipulated the song order and, with the assistance of musical director John Bell, have formed a piece that works quite well in telling a story of two city singles in two separate apartments. Of course, this success is primarily due to the strength of Sondheim's writing, a world where even the material that doesn't fit into the show in which it was originally intended can be a worthy contribution to another show.

Some of the material is well known to the musical theater community. "There Won't Be Trumpets" (cut from "Anyone Can Whistle"), "Can That Boy Foxtrot" and "Bring on the Girls" (both cut from "Follies") and "The Girls of Summer" are frequently used for cabarets and auditions, while others such as "Happily Ever After" (the precursor to "Being Alive" from "Company") and "Silly People" (culled from "A Little Night Music") are lesser known gems given first rate deliveries by the two singers.

With new songs added for this revival, including "Rainbows" from the never-happened film version of "Into The Woods" (which, ironically, has now been filmed based on the Broadway version for release in 2014) and "Ah, But Underneath" (also cut from "Follies"), hopefully they will remain in the version available for licensing for theater groups to enjoy in the present.
