’Deeply Religious’ Gloria Gaynor Has Go-Go Boys Removed At WeHo Appearance

Aging disco diva Gloria Gaynor caused a bit of a stir this week, for allegedly delaying a performance in a West Hollywood gay club to clear the room of any go-go dancers and keep all shirtless men in the audience moved back to the crowd out of her line of sight.

TMZ reports that the 64-year-old disco diva known best for her gay anthems "I Will Survive" and "I Am What I Am" appeared at The Abbey, the famed West Hollywood gay nightspot known for it's celebrity appearances and scantily clad go-go boys. The performance however, was delayed when singer requested that management remove the go-go boys and keep all shirtless men out of her line of sight.

According to TMZ, representatives from Ms. Gaynor's camp claim the request was made not because the singer is homophobic, but just deeply religious.

The incident at The Abbey isn't the first time the born again Christian singer has made comments that offended her gay fan base, without whom she arguably wouldn't have much of a career.

Pink News reported that in a 2007 interview with BBC Radio, while on tour in the UK, Gaynor said, when asked by presenter Jane Little how she felt about being a gay icon. "I feel good about it because I feel it is a platform for my purpose, which is to bring the love of Christ to all of my fans. Because they trust me, I think." When further probed by Little if the singer thought homosexuality was sinful, Gaynor replied, "I want to lead them to Christ, simply, and whatever he has for them."

Fans who may choose to believe that Gaynor's request last this week at The Abbey, could harken back to rumors surrounding the undisputed queen of disco herself, Donna Summer who reportedly said that AIDS was God's punishment. POZ reports that Summer would later dispute the quote in a 1989 open letter to the members of Act-Up who took to protesting the singer's performance at a Boston Pride Party.

A lot of hypocrisy on her part! She does not mind using men as sex symbols in her performances, but then takes a negative view toward Gay men who may also appreciate the men performing in her shows.

"...not because the singer is homophobic, but just deeply religious." Unfortunately those 2 things are inextricably linked in our society. How many "deeply religious" people have you met who are not homophobic? I wonder if she has the torsos of Jesus on the cross covered before she sings in church due to her "deeply religious" feelings.

We have to respect that fact that she is religious. I mean given the fact that she decided to even come to our venue is enough. I don’t think she wanted the shirtless men gone cuz they were gay, she just didn’t want to "sin" lol
