Lay The Favorite

"Lay the Favorite" could be called Sexy Baby and Her Adventures in Gambling. Based on the biography about Beth Raymer's transition from private stripping to high stakes gambling, honestly, it feels like a bad ABC Family movie with the outrageous plot and sub-par acting. It also wastes some major A-list stars.

Beth (Rebecca Hall) leaves Florida for Las Vegas. She meets pro-gambler Dink (Bruce Willis), his overbearing wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and sexy assistant (Laura Prepon). Instantly, her daddy issues and skills at bad decision making get her entranced into his world of sports gambling. She gets into trouble and sucks people into her world of ineptitude.

Hall has an irritating voice and her attempt at playing child-like innocence reads as stupidity. In the meantime, Zeta-Jones, Prepon, Vince Vaughn and Joshua Jackson are all underutilized.

Instantly, her daddy issues and skills at bad decision making get her entranced by his world of sports gambling.

The Blu-ray of the film includes some deleted scenes. Ultimately they are short and do not improve the film in any way.

"Lay the Favorite" is unforgettable...in a bad way. It wastes high production value, great actors and good source material on a film that feels flat, unfunny and a really stupid bet.
