That Thing You Do!
The Blu-ray debut of the Tom Hanks penned and directed "That Thing You Do!" probably won’t have people clamoring at the stores waiting to pick up a copy. But the story of a group of young kids riding on the coattails of the Beatles’ success in the 1960’s coasts along as smoothly as a summer breeze. Part of the film’s charm is that there is no hidden meaning or agenda.
It’s 1964 and the Beatles have taken the world by storm. This leads a pack of clean-cut kids in Pennsylvania to form a group that eerily sounds like the British super-band. Guy Patterson (Hanks look-alike Tom Everett Scott) joins the group and gives it the fast sound it desperately needs.
Of course, their song "That Thing You Do" becomes their signature song...and becomes the group’s downfall as well, as the band struggles with fame and fortune. As you watch the film, the title track of the movie plays incessantly...you may wish it was called "That Thing You Don’t" instead.
The ever-likable Hanks has a secondary role as the manager of The Wonders (previously named The Oneders). Other actors, who have gone on to bigger movies (Charlize Theron as Guy’s girlfriend, and Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, Steve Zahn, and Giovanni Ribisi), play band members.
