With the "Transformers" film franchise going strong, audiences appear readily nostalgic returning to the toy chest to play with old favorites - one real American Hero with Kung-Fu grip comes to mind. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," available now on Blu-ray, reassembles the team under the leadership of none other than action film veterans Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Bruce Willis. The two are in charge of what’s left of the elite core of freedom fighters after an attack from their nemesis Cobra puts the evil terrorist organization in a position to unleash havoc on the free world.

Picking up where the last film left off, the unsuspecting team of soldiers are sent on a mission meant to decimate their numbers, and place their enemies in control of a powerful weapon ready to bring terror across the globe. With the fate of the world at stake, the few remaining Joes led by ROADBLOCK (Johnson), must stop their enemy from further infiltrating the White House, and to do this they must rely on the "original" American Hero, enter Bruce Willis.

There are few directors in Hollywood who could pull off what Jon M. Chu has managed with this sequel to "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." That film had a more Sci-Fi and cartoony feel to it befitting the material. Here, Chu has chosen to elaborate more on the intimate mythology of the G.I. Joe characters, but not skip the heavily anticipated action. There are ninjas swinging across mountains and battling on cliff faces, James Bond-esque covert missions and thrilling battles in underground lairs. With a script that appears hopeful, it’s thin at times and compromises bullets for brains.

"Retaliation" may be better than the first film, but it’s still pandering to the fan... and if you are a true fan of this elite fighting force - then this film is for you. Bonus features take the viewer behind-the-scenes, detail some of the more incredible stunts, and reintroduces fans to the original Joes and Cobra enemies that the film’s cast is based on. Sneak peaks into the choreography needed to realize fight sequences between favorite ninjas SNAKE-EYES and STORM SHADOW are really what makes this package worth checking out - and that’s half the battle!
