One of the best films of 2012, as well as one of the most sadly overlooked, "The Impossible" arrives on Blu-ray for audiences to experience personally. And what an experience it is. The true story of a family that survived the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami that destroyed a resort town in Khao Lak, Thailand, the film stars Oscar nominee Naomi Watts and Ewan MacGregor, and introduces fifteen year old Tom Holland whose performance is nothing short of spectacular. Featuring a harrowing sequence when the tsunami hits, the story might seem like a big downer, but this family's story is anything but. It is powerful, heart-breaking, and ultimately uplifting. The entire cast is phenomenal, but it is Watts and Holland that will blow you away.
Special Features are slim, but worth checking out. Audio Commentary by director J.A. Bayona, writer Sergio G. Sanchez, producer Belen Atienzsa, and one of the film's actual subjects, Maria Belon. This is the most fascinating aspect of the commentary - to hear not only what Maria thought of the film itself, but also how factual and accurate the recreations of the events were."Casting 'The Impossible'" featurette - interviews the directors, producers, and actors of the film.
The entire cast is phenomenal, but it is Watts and Holland that will blow you away."Realizing 'The Impossible'" - a short featurette on the making of the film, including how they reconstructed the tsunami and what scenes were shot in the same locations as the actual events.Five deleted scenes - most don't add too much to the film, but there is a beautiful sequence of the eldest son watching a nurse comfort a hurt child in the ER.Theatrical Trailer
