Imagine Thelma and Louise alive, old and queer. Their sequel would be "Cloudburst," a road movie that visits all the lesbian stereotypes along the way.

Olympia Dukakis is flannel and wife-beater-wearing Stella, an abrasive dyke who screams her love of cunt ("it’s a temple!") to everyone she encounters. She’s lived with now legally blind partner Dot (the fabulous Brenda Fricker) for 31 years, and Stella grows even more agitated when Dot’s granddaughter wants to move her gran into a nursing home after a fall (caused by Stella’s enthusiastic vibrator use).

The duo flees from Bangor, Maine, in their red pickup, and heads over the border to Canada, where they can marry and get better legal footing to gain power of attorney. Along the way they pick up dancer/hitchhiker Prentice (Ryan Doucette), on his way to see his dying mother, who takes them around scenic Nova Scotia vistas.

Thom Fitzgerald directed and wrote the screenplay, a veritable lesbialmanac of references to Rosie O’Donnell cruises, Ellen and Portia comparisons, and the imprecation "Jesus Anne Heche Christ," all set to a k.d. lang soundtrack.

The story is lively in its portrayal of unabashed and imperfect "fat" lesbians, yet a number of implausible situations, such as the granddaughter getting handcuffed by her cop husband during the nuptials, limit potentially fresher interpretations by the two Oscar-winning women (both won for Best Supporting Actress in the late 80s: Dukakis for "Moonstruck" and Fricker for "My Left Foot").

The DVD includes brief interviews with the three leads and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
