Dead Man Down

Revenge thrillers. They are a constant art in the Hollywood money-making machine and often times there comes a crop of actors that have to pay their dues by participating in a senseless saga of violence and vengeance. "Dead Man Down" starring Colin Farrell, available now on Blu-ray, tries to be more than just a blood bath, but throwing in Noomi Rapace and Terrence Howard does not an arthouse film make.

Set against a criminal underworld permeating New York City's streets, Farrell plays a professional assassin who gets caught between the crime lord he is under contract to serve, and a woman (Rapace) who has her own agenda. This complicated relationship leads Farrell on a dangerously perilous path full of bullets and a body count. Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but this film cold use some heat. "Dean Man Down" spirals into oblivion, and it isn't long before your attention span goes with it.

With a cast of veteran actors that are known for creating compelling characters on screen, there is very little happening here that has any dimension this side of a video game. Niels Arden Opley's film is as unengaging as the chemistry between its stars, though they do their best. Bonus features on the discs are limited and only reveal the technical aspects of shooting the fight sequences and the cinematography behind the film. An additional documentary goes into the development of the storyline behind "Dead Man Down" but it hardly seems special - don't take the bullet!
