The Heat

The Heat

"The Heat" was a massive hit this summer, but was hit or miss with audiences. While some found it hilarious, many others didn't quite connect with the comedy. While it stars two greats - Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock -- and is directed by "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig -- the film is too long and too wholly mean-spirited for the comedy to really hit home. McCarthy's character relies on foul-language and her brazen appearance to go for the laughs, while Bullock's straight-gal seems a bit forced. That said, they are such likeable actresses you kind of root for them even if you aren't laughing at them.

But I will give the studio credit for releasing a Blu-ray where the extras are well worth spending time. Not only are there five audio commentaries, but there are also a slew of featurettes that are actually just a compilation of outtakes, bloopers, and all around silliness on set. Seriously. There's a 15-minute blooper reel, but then all the other features (while disguised by serious sounding titles) are simply more goofball antics. Which, quite honestly, was terrific!

The Commentary tracks consist of:

  • "The Commentary Track in Which the Director of 'The Heat' Talks Endlessly About 'The Heat'" features director Paul Feig talking about the production.
  • "The Commentary Track in Which Melissa McCarthy and Other Great People from 'The Heat' Talk About 'The Heat'" consists of McCarthy, Feig, the screenwriter and a handful of supporting actors.
  • "The Commentary Track In Which Some of the Mullins Family Discuss 'The Heat'" features Feig along with some of the actors that played the Boston family sharing their memories as the characters in the film.
  • "Attend the June 23,2013 Premiere of 'The Heat' at the Ziegfeld Theatre in the Comfort of Your Own Home!" adds a laugh track to the film to make it seem like you're with an actual audience.
  • "The Original Lineup from 'Mystery Science Theatre 3000' Comments on 'The Heat' " is the weakest track, as the crew is making jokes about a comedy that for the most part people enjoyed.

Special Features (again, mostly all bloopers and outtakes) are:
  • "Mullins Family Fun" - more antics from the actors playing the Mullins family and their girlfriends.
  • "Acting Master Class" - is 10 minutes of Bullock and McCarthy playing drunk while taping their noses up to look like pigs.
  • "Let's Get Physical" - shows repeated takes of some of the physical comedy in the film.
  • "Police Brutality" shows McCarthy's ad-libbing skills.
  • "Von Bloopers" - 15 minutes of outtakes from the film.
  • "All the Stuff We Had to Take Out But Still Think is Funny" are 30-minutes of deleted, extended, and alternate scenes cut from the film.
  • "Over and Out" - Feig saying "so long" after the features are over.
