Undressing Israel

This may come to some as a culture shock but Israel is a much more open-minded and welcoming society when it comes to how its LGBT citizens compare to the United States. While we slowly work to pass marriage equality across our nation - the Land of the Free - Israel has laws that not only support same-sex marriage but also protect gay parents, partners and spiritually provide an environment worthy of examination. Eye-Opening! Enlightened, moving and very real "Undressing Israel: Gay Men in the Promised Land" is enviably inspiring.

Adult industry provocateur Michael Lucas pulls the veil back in his documentary film on a part of the world that we often look at through a narrow lens. The world news likes to paint the Middle East as a third-world culture trolling in political quagmire and religions strife, but Lucas begins our visit by introducing viewers to some of the very modern country's most fashion forward denizens. It's no secret the there exists an allure of attraction to these beautifully sculptured, Mediterranean people, but there's a joy of life that is equally magnetic.

Through his visit of Israel and especially Tel Aviv, Lucas takes us into the politics of Israel and especially how the country treats everyone regardless of their sexual orientation equally. The city's Gay Pride festivities are among the only ones in the world completely state funded. Through the evolution of the individual stories we meet some of Israel's LGBT leaders, its gay parents, and of course explore its unparalleled nightlife circuit - an experience that would put any major North American metropolis to shame, including New York City.

Israel's progressive attitudes toward LGBT rights and equality are inspiring and exhilarating. This documentary should serve as a template to the world - if Israel can work toward getting it all together - why is it taking the rest of us so long to get caught up. Welcome to the Promised Land - it's all here in Israel.

"Undressing Israel: Gay Men in the Promised Land"
the documentary from Michael Lucas is available "uncut" on DVD for $24.99
and includes commentary from the filmmaker and footage from various film festivals.
