"Men in Black 3" propels the sci-fi franchise through a Danny Elfman score into the familiar yet muddled world of time travel, as Agent J (the eternally quippy Will Smith) literally jumps into the past to save the life, and possibly reboot the personality, of current partner Agent K (a haggard Tommy Lee Jones) by befriending his 1960s incarnation, replicated by Josh Brolin.

The script, by Etan Cohen, evokes time-hopping forebears like "Back to the Future" (I kept expecting to see Michael "Agent J" Fox skateboard by), but doesn’t seem to cover much ground in any decade, despite being framed around 1969’s moon launch.

Human centipede-like Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement, overusing Christian Bale’s Batman-raspy voice), escapes from a prison on the moon to wreak vengeance on the man who took his arm, while all iterations of K rekindle a relationship with O, played in the present by a well-coiffured Emma Thompson.

This Blu-ray and DVD set includes a variety of special features, including a Spot the Alien Game, where viewers can zap invaders using the remote; "The Evolution of Cool: MIB 1960s vs. Today" featurette, where past and present weapons, technology, vehicles and uniforms are compared; the special effects featurette "Keeping It Surreal: The FX of MIB 3" (the monstrous aliens are created by Rick Baker); "Partners in Time: The Making of MIB 3," four scene investigations (deconstructions of the lunar escape, Mr. Wu’s gun fight, J’s time travel, a double monocycle chase); five progression reels, including animation supervisors discussing key visual effects sequences; a gag reel; and the "Back in Time" music video, this version by Pitbull, not Huey Lewis.
