What A Difference A Decade Makes
From the launch of Gmail to the death of Oldsmobile, 2004 was a year to remember. It was the year that a pre-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice testified before the 9/11 Commission and the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower was laid on the site of the World Trade Center in NYC. It was the year in which "Friends" ended its run on TV, Ken Jennings began his 74-game winning streak on "Jeopardy" and the Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. In spring of that year, Massachusetts made history by legalizing gay marriage.
Covering those events for the first time was a small, Boston-based publication determined to bring Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) news and lifestyle coverage into the 21st century. EDGE was born.
It's been one decade since EDGE's first web-based portal went live, launching an umbrella of websites that would become the largest network of local LGBT news and entertainment portals in the world, serving over 2.6 million dedicated readers from metropolitan areas in the United States and beyond. Our editorial team has written nearly 100,000 stories. We've given away nearly 120,000 prizes to community members via our innovative Giveaway Center. And our paparazzi photographers have taken a staggering 369,000 photos in nightclubs and community events such as Gay Pride the world over.
Since 2004, the US has ramped to seventeen states allowing same-sex marriage, and equality is making huge strides within and without our states. In the world of entertainment we've seen the return of the movie musical and the rise of Lady Gaga, while Britney cleaned her act up and Madonna continued to reign supreme. In fashion, capri, cargo and short shorts all had their day while everyone got at least one piercing or tattoo. In the realm of technology, computers got faster, phones got smaller, then smarter, then bigger again, and laptops turned into tablets. Strides in HIV research have further mitigated the impact of the pandemic on our lives. All in one decade!
In celebration of our tenth anniversary, EDGE is proud to launch a series of ten-year retrospective articles on topics ranging from politics to the fight for marriage equality and global LGBT human rights to advances in science and the war on AIDS. We'll also be mapping out a decade's worth of trends in entertainment and style. We'll follow the rise and fall of some of our favorite and least favorite celebrities. We'll track the past decade's change in nightlife trends as we look back on ten years of DJs, clubs and circuit parties as only EDGE has covered.
We're so thrilled to have been successful for over a decade in our quest to bring high-quality LGBT news and entertainment to our communities. And we're excited to see what the next ten years brings for the LGBT community, and for our own little community here at the EDGE Network. Join us as we look back... and look forward to some truly exciting next steps.
Thanks for reading these last ten years. And we promise: You ain't seen nothing yet!
