Bondi Beach :: Bringing Aussie Pride Stateside
2011 is well shaping up as a year to remember. The events criss-crossing the country in celebration of LGBT Pride and all that the community has achieved politically in the past year is culminating in major events, with major productions in every big city across the nation; and New York City is certainly not pulling any punches. Party producers Tony Fornabaio and Brandon Voss are lasking...are you ready to get some sand in your shorts next weekend?
Taking an unconventional look at the popularized theory of a "stay-cation" the boys are brining Australia's most famous beach to the east coast with a "beach blanket bingo" on Governors Island. The surf is up, so grab your surf boards and beach chairs for an afternoon celebrating Pride on Bondi Beach.
"We're really excited about bringing something a little different - with a little twist to Governors Island," Fornabaio reveals about the upcoming Pride party. The 172-acre stretch of land situated on the southern tip of Manhattan Island has hosted spectacular Pride events in the past. Turning it into an Australian oasis will be an undertaking for the combined engineers behind NYC's most infamous nightlife events. FV Events (Fornabaio and Voss) are collaborating with Josh Wood and Jared Needle to achieve what will certainly be anticipated as the Pride event of the season.
Surf’s Up! Pride is On!
"We’re very passionate about the whole thing - especially in the spirit of Gay Pride," Tony acknowledged. Arguably the pressure to put on one of New York City’s most incredible affairs is on their minds, but the boys are not letting it cloud the business at hand. "We know what we’re doing and we just keep going in work mode," Voss admits. "We gotta do what we do without adding the pressure to have to be the best." Adding Fornabaio: "It keeps us on our toes."
They are promising to deliver an event worthy of Gay Pride in NYC. Expected attendees are in the thousands, and with headlining DJs Phil Romano and Hector Romero already on the ticket, the beats are a guarantee.
"Normally NYC nightlife is embellished with all of the hot go-go boys," says Tony, "but we’re working with a choreographer to loop in this very surfer boy motif." The set itself with be of an impressive proportion and is designed to capture the wild surf of Bondi Beach (think crashing waves). "It’s going to be massive," Voss interjects. "We’ve got a beach, an ocean, and crazy Australian animals everywhere." Perhaps they’re referring to some hot Aussie imports that will be making the scene; but we’re betting they don’t mean kangaroos. We’ll have to wait and see.
One guaranteed Australian beauty attending the event will be the live performer at the center of it all. Olivia Newton-John will be headlining Bondi Beach, singing her hits for fans, including perhaps the currently remixed version of her hit song "Magic."
"There are events and promoters coming out of the woodwork," Voss recognizes. "There’s certainly more competition than I’ve seen in recent times." And the gentlemen agree that it makes for a very inspiring increase in club culture. "We’ve been very consistent with what what we produce...and it’s great that there are suddenly options," Fornabaio elaborates. "It’s also flattering - people see what we do and want to recreate it."
Every event that FV Events stamps their brand on is only working to expand on their mystique and durability on the nightlife circuit, which is very good for business and the local economy.
"Everything that we put into FV Events we’ll be putting into XL." The super club that will be located in the luxe space of the much anticipated Out NYC Hotel in midtown is expected to launch presumably before the end of the year. "We’d love to create something that is the first of it’s kind, and then bring it somewhere else." But for the moment catch a wave and show your Pride when Tony Fornabaio, Brandon Voss, Josh Wood and Jared Needle present Bondi Beach NYC Pride Weekend, Saturday, June 25.
The event begins at 6pm and goes through midnight. Ticket information is available online at Bondi Beach Ticket Info including details on ferry schedules from Pier 11 leaving for Governors Island.
