A former Miss Spain announced this week that she is lesbian, making her what some are saying is the first out national beauty queen, People magazine reports.

Patricia Yurena Rodriguez took to her Instagram on August 19 and posted a photo of her in bed with her girlfriend, DJ Vanesa Cortes.

"Romeo and Juliet," the picture's caption reads. As of this writing, the pic has more than 8,000 likes.

Rodriguez, 24, was crowned Miss Spain in 2008 and in 2013.

The beauty queen defended her decision to post the pic in Spanish newspaper La Opinion de Tenerife.

"I do not regret what I did because I'm thrilled with what is happening to me," she told the publication in Spanish.

She took to Instagram again and posted a thank you message to fans who have supported her.

Rodriguez was also the runner-up at Miss Universe 2013 in Moscow, People notes. The completion made headlines that year because of Russia's highly controversial anti-gay law, which prohibits spreading gay "propaganda" to minors.

The pageant has also come under fire when a Canadian transgender contestant was banned.
