’And Stay Out!’: Okla. Counter Protesters Drive Westboro Baptist Church Members Out of Town
In a counter protest, citizens of Moore, Okla., chased out members of the Westboro Baptist Church Sunday, when the organization appeared at Central Junior High School, Oklahoma City’s NBC-affiliate station KFOR-TV reports.
The Kansas-based hate group showed up in the small town, waving their requisite "God Hates Fags" signs nearly a year after Moore was hit by a devastating tornado. According to the church’s website, members are protesting the school because it is housing Plaza Towers Elementary students who were displaced after the school was destroyed in a tornado that took the lives of seven students. The WBC says the natural disaster is really an exercise of "God’s wrath."
The WBC reportedly had permission to picket for a half hour, starting around 2 p.m., but only managed to get about eight minutes of public hate before they jumped into their cars and zoomed away after Moore citizens crossed picket lines. Police had to intervene and separate the irate townspeople, who counter protested, from members of the WBC.
Authorities said no one was arrested or taken into custody, however.
"It’s just sickening. You know, it’s just innocent kids that lost lives and it’s sickening for them to even think that way," Moore citizen Amanda Eccles told KFOR-TV.
