A candlelight vigil in Washington will mark 15 years since the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was abducted and killed in Laramie, Wyo.

The vigil is being held Friday following a performance of the play "The Laramie Project" at Ford's Theatre. The play presents the community's response to Shepard's 1998 murder and the resulting media attention. The vigil is being held nearby at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

The vigil's organizers say Dennis Shepard, Matthew Shepard's father, will join the group.

"The Laramie Project" runs through Oct. 27.
