Houston Mayor Parker May Marry Partner Next Month

It was revealed last Friday that Houston Mayor Annise Parker may finally tie the knot with her longtime partner in January, the Houston Chronicle reports.

A source close to Parker and her partner of 23 years, Kathy Hubbard, remained anonymous but told the newspaper that the women plan to say "I do" in Palm Springs, Calif., next month.

"I heard it from her own lips," the anonymous source told the Chronicle.

Parker, who was elected to her third and final term as Houston mayor in November, has vowed that she would not marry Hubbard until marriage equality is legalized in Texas. But as the Chronicle reports, Parker has made recent public statements that suggest otherwise.

When the Supreme Court ruled that California's Proposition 8 and a section of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional, she said the decision made her reconsider legally marrying her partner because of the message it sends to the couple's two adopted children.

"The mayor very much appreciates the interest in the 23-year relationship she has shared with her life partner, First Lady Kathy Hubbard," Parker's spokeswoman Jessica Michan said in a statement. "However, marriage is a private matter and she has no announcements she wishes to make at this time. If that changes, we will let you know."
