Russell Tovey, Tom Blyth Signed to Star in Gay Entrapment Drama 'Plainclothes'

Out actor Russell Tovey and fellow Brit Tom Blyth have signed on to star in a new movie about a plainclothes police officer assigned to entrap and then arrest gay men for cruising. The officer, however, shares a spark with one of the men he's supposed to be luring to a life-altering brush with the law.

The film is "inspired by true events," Variety reported, though it's unclear whether the story will be based on a real-life story of a cop falling for a gay man while on the prowl to catch guys cottaging, or if the "true events are simply the long and shameful history of law enforcement seeking to entice and entrap citizens based on their sexuality.

The film is "[s]et in the '90s," Variety detailed, and involves "a working-class undercover officer [who] is tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets."

Reports did not specify which roles the two actors would play, so it's possible that either Tovey, who is known for his gay roles on "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," "American Horror Story," and "Looking," or Blyth, who has appeared on the HBO series "The Gilded Age" and starred in last year's "The Hunger Games" prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," will end up being the "My Policeman" of the piece.

The film marks the feature debut of writer-director Carmen Emmi, who has written and directed several shorts and TV episodes.

Producers Arthur Landon and Colby Cote sand Emmi's praises, telling Variety, "'Plainclothes' is a heartfelt story that deals with internal conflict, family and the complexities of sexual identity in the face of societal and personal expectations."

"We are excited to bring his first screenplay life with this incredible cast," the producers added.

Reports suggest that Blyth has a girlfriend. Even so, his Insta account is stocked with plenty of thirst-inspiring (if modest) photos. Take a look at a few, below.
