After last summer's writer's strike put the kibosh on many projects in Hollywood, electric director John Waters had to shelve many of his plans to create more cult classic works of art.

But now that Hollywood is back into the swing of things, Waters recently opened up to Variety about his long-awaited 'Liarmouth' project with Aubrey Plaza attached to star.

He was in Los Angeles for the weekend to provide live commentary for his newly restored, first two short films, "Hag in a Black Leather Jacket" and "Roman Candles" at the Academy Museum.

About "Liarmouth," he explained that "the book was optioned."

"I turned in the script. They like the script, but we don't have the money to make it," said Waters about the project, which highlights the life of compulsive kleptomaniac Marsha Sprinkle.

"I'm thrilled that she's going to [star in it], but we don't have the money yet," he said, "I don't know what's going to happen, and so I'm trying to get 'Fruitcake' going too. We'll see."

Hard to believe, Waters' last film was 20 years ago. "But I've been paid to write six other ones in that time," he said. "Four different sequels to 'Hairspray'; [Christmas comedy] 'Fruitcake,' which has gone through a couple of versions that still might happen; and 'Liarmouth,'" based on his 2022 novel, which he dubbed "a feel-bad romance."
