Fans of former "Ru Paul’s Drag Race" contestant Carmen Carrera have started a petition on Change.org to make the model the first-ever transgender Victoria’s Secret "Angel" ever. The petition is gathering steam, with more than 42,000 supporters at the time of publication.

"By making Carmen the very first trans supermodel, you will help to end femmephobia within the LGBTIQQA community, but also it will show the entire trans community that you embrace them as your patrons," said Marco Regalado, who founded the petition.

On the Change.org website, Regalado argues that Victoria’s Secret has a long reputation for launching the careers of supermodels, and that their Angels push the barriers whether it’s on the runway or in photo shoots.

"That’s just what Carmen does!" writes Regalado. "She’s a force to be reckoned with and deserves to walk the same runway as legends like Gisele and Heidi Klum."

For her part, Carrera -- who said her gender is "nobody’s business, except who I’m intimate with" -- says that she was flattered by the strong response by the community, and grateful to her fans.

"My fans and supporters prove that they have a strong voice and believe in change," said Carrera. "I’m proud to have been seen as their first pick for something this major. I’m thankful to have gotten as much support as I’ve received. I’m hoping that this is a forecast to an equal and loving future."

Regalado hopes that Victoria’s Secret will take the overwhelming public support seriously and ask Carrera to model, saying, "To see a transgender model walk would show that trans women are taken seriously, and that Angels are selected because of their character and talent. As a brand, Victoria’s Secret should feel comfortable marketing toward all types of women."

One naysayer identified as Maria Napoles also started a Change.org petition to not hire Carrera just because her fans had started a petition. The short-lived effort closed after getting only 9 supporters.

But the effort has garnered more than 200,000 "likes" on Carrera’s Facebook page from people who either support Carrera’s effort, or who would like to see any transwoman model for Victoria’s Secret.

"We wear bras too. We need support! I’m looking forward to your response, and I’ll be here waiting," said Carrera to Victoria’s Secret in the YouTube video below.
