Fans Launch Petition Urging Netflix to Renew 'Sense8'

Friday Jun 2, 2017

Diehard fans of the LGBT series "Sense8," which was canceled Thursday, launched a Change.org petition to urge Netflix to keep the sci-fi show around.

As of this writing, the petition has nearly an impressive 209,000 signatures out of the 300,000 needed. Click here to sign.

"The cancellation of 'Sense8 -Season 3' has been completely unexpected," the petition reads. "We don't know any reasons yet, however it's quite strange that a show that has received such positive response from a wide and heterogeneous audience, gets cancelled."

It goes on to say:

Being fans of the series, we would like to know a valid explanation, arguing why "Sense8" has been cancelled. We believe it is necessary that tv shows and movies which, from its content, provide the world with a message of love, diversity and respect. All these values have been brought to life by the characters of the show, and the message it has is extremely important for society.

We understand whatever the reasons could have been, yet we believe that as a visual product, "Sense8" does have all these values we recognize, and has perfectly managed to trasmit [sic] it to the viewers. It is not just a tv show, to watch for fun, instead of just being that, "Sense 8" has given the world a new way of seeing others: with acceptance, love and understanding.

After Netflix pulled the plug on "Sense8" the hashtags #RenewSense8 and #BringBackSense8 began trending on Twitter.

The official Twitter account for "Sense8" also reacted to the news with a tweet.

The streaming service's VP of original content, Cindy Holland, made a statement Thursday, confirming the cancelation of the Wachowsk co-created sci-fi drama.

"After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the 'Sense8' cluster is coming to an end," Holland said . "It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable."

"Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world," Holland added. "We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment."

The cancelation comes soon after Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings said the company may become more strict and cancel more shows. Last month Netflix nixed "The Get Down" after one season. Both "Sense8" and "The Get Down" were reportedly expensive series to produce.
