Review: Sci-Fi Meets Kung Fu in Arrow's "Jesus Shows You The Way To The Highway" Now On Blu-ray

If David Lynch were to take acid and direct a James Bond futuristic spy film, the end result could very well be Arrow Video's new release. With a retro looking and neon-colored Blu-ray cover, you'd think that "Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway" was made sometime in 1975. The tongue twister titled film was made in 2019 and will awe you with its nonsensical presentation.

"Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway" defies logic. The mumbo-jumbo plot can be described as surreal science fiction meets the kung-fu fighting genre. The future looks very bleak in 2035 and two CIA special agents get called upon for a new mission. It seems the CIA's computer system has been attacked by Soviet Union, an ironically named cyber virus.

The special agents' doppelgangers enter the virtual reality of Psychobook (the CIA's operating system) where they run into bizarre people such as a cocaine-addicted Batman lookalike and a simulation of Jesus Christ. Oh, and then there are superheroes dressed up like giant flies on hand, adding to the strange happenings in the film.

I couldn't really figure out the underlying theme of "Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway" but maybe that's point. With its grainy and muted color schemes, gratuitous nudity and sex, and overuse of obviously dubbed actors, "Jesus" seems to be sucked out of a 1970's drive-in.

An audio interview with Director Miguel Llanso only aids in confusing the viewer. He claims he wanted to make a movie that defied genres and used multiple ethnic actors, who could purposely be dubbed over in English.

On this Limited Edition Blu-ray, Llano's first feature film ("Crumbs") gets included and can be seen as the companion piece to "Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway." It features many of the same actors.
