Once - Original Broadway Cast Recording

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of "Once" has just been released to coincide with the musical's opening at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. With a fan base firmly ensconced in the 18-34 age range, this recording has already proven to be a popular listen, with its accessible, folk-rock sound completely self-accompanied by the show's cast.

The score, written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (together the duo goes by the moniker, "The Swell Season"), is a pleasant mix of guitar-based pop tinged with an Irish sensibility. Hansard and Irglova played the two lead characters in the film version, songwriters seeking inspiration and love within the hearts of one another, and have deftly found delightful counterparts for the stage in Steve Kazee (Broadway's "Spamalot" and "110 in the Shade") and Cristin Milioti (" The Lieutenant of Inishmore," "Coram Boy "). The song "Falling Slowly," featured in the film, won an Academy Award, and is included here, along with two new tracks, "Abandoned in Bandon" and the Czech folk song, "Ej Pada Pada Rosicka." Other notable tracks include Kazee's emotional "Gold," and Milioti's desperate "The Hill." Both "Gold" and "Falling Slowly" are also offered in alternate versions on the recording.

Featuring the award-winning song, "Falling Slowly," this recording continues to grow a listening audience.

It's refreshing to see a new product being released by Masterworks Broadway, which has focused most of its recent energies on the restoration and release of older Broadway recordings. If you enjoy the recordings of Duncan Sheik's "Spring Awakening" or Michael Friedman's "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson," checking out this soundtrack will prove an enjoyable expansion for your ears.
