Mario Lopez won't be saved by the bell for comments he recently made about transgender children.

The actor is coming under fire this week for remarks he made while on "The Candace Owens Show," a series on the PragerU YouTube channel, Yahoo News reports. The controversial conservative pundit talked about how "weird" Hollywood can be when it comes to their children, citing stars like Charlize Theron, who said she's allowing her children to "pick their gender."

"A lot of weird trends come out of Hollywood and one of the weirder ones, for me, is this new trend where celebrities are coming out — and I know Charlize Theron did this a few weeks ago — and saying that their child is picking their gender," she told Lopez, 45. "And this is strange to me. And they say, 'Oh, I looked at my child and my child was swimming in a bathtub and looked up and said, "Mommy, I'm a boy,"' and that's weird."

Owens went on to say that working as a nanny has convinced her that children don't always mean what they say.

"I am trying to understand this new Hollywood mentality where they just think their children now have the mental authority," she added.

Lopez responded, that he is "kind of blown away, too."

"Look, I'm never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can't go wrong," he said. "But at the same time, my God, if you're 3 years old and you're saying you're feeling a certain way or you think you're a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it's dangerous as a parent to make this determination then, well, OK, then you're going to a boy or a girl, whatever the case may be."

"It's sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on," the actor added. "When you're a kid, you don't know anything about sexuality yet. You're just a kid."

Owens responded by saying that parents who do this are narcissists who are showing off their tolerance.

"I think parents need to allow their kids to be kids but at the same time, you gotta be the adult in the situation," Lopez said. "Pause with that and, I think the formative years is when you start having those discussions and really start making these declarations," he said while using air quotes.

He also told Owens his older kids "don't kick it" with other children who are trans or gender non-binary.

Twitter users took issue with Lopez's comments.

Newsweek notes that Lopez has been open about his conservative views, even posting a selfie with then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, but has been supportive of the LGBTQ community. In 2011 and 2012, he was a presenter at the GLAAD Media Awards and named grand marshal at the 2015 Miami Beach Gay Pride parade.

Lopez has yet to respond to the backlash.
