Watch: Social Media Celebrates World Emoji Day With Videos and Tweets

Monday Jul 17, 2017

Poop, Earth, Smiley Face, Calendar - Translates to "Shit! It's World Emoji Day!"

It's July 17, the official global celebration of emoji. The unofficial holiday which is primarily celebrated online on social media platforms is getting it's fourth go-around having initially been launched in 2014. As part of the festivities, the Empire State Building in New York City will be lit up emoji yellow tonight. Additionally, winners of the 2017 World Emoji Awards will be announced live from the New York Stock Exchange and stream live on video platform Cheddar at 3:40 p.m..

July 17 was first tapped as World Emoji Day (WED) in 2014. The date was chosen because July 17 is famously displayed on the iOS Calendar Emoji.

The event even spawned its own song and video. Written and produced by Jonathan Mann, WED Emoji search engine Emojipedia is encouraging all to upload their own version of the video with them singing along.

So, is WED a thing? #WorldEmojiDay been the number one trending topic on Twitter all day.

Here's how people and organizations are celebrating today.
