Legendary Gay Porn Director John Travis Dies at 75

Wednesday Jan 11, 2017

Legendary gay porn director John Travis and former studio owner has died, according to director Chi Chi LaRue. He was reportedly 75-years-old.

Taking to Twitter on Jan. 8, LaRue broke the news to his 66,600 Twitter followers.

Beginning his career in the 70s with 9 mm loops, Travis is best known for discovering gay porn star Jeff Stryker, who went on to becoming one of the most popular gay adult actors in the 90s.

Stryker told Adult Video News the veteran director was found dead on Jan. 8 at his home in Shadow Hills, Calif. He added Travis has been fighting a stomach virus for several weeks.

"Apparently he had a heart attack. The virus weakened him down," Stryker said, adding the director was "one of the founders of the adult industry."

Travis directed films for Falcon Entertainment, Brentwood Studios, Huge Video and Catalina Video. In 1992, he, along with producer Scott Masters, formed the Studio 2000. Some of Travis' biggest adult flicks include, "The Other Side of Aspen 2," "A Matter of Size," and "The Young and the Hung."

"He and Matt Sterling started selling 8mm loops out of the trunk of their car in Florida," Stryker told AVN, adding that Travis worked on hundreds and possibly thousands of films throughout his career.

"He created everybody that was anybody," Stryker said, explaining this was "back in the days when directors were star makers."

Stryker said Travis is survived by his sister and a niece and nephew.
