Out Olympic skater Adam Rippon's mother appeared on CNN Thursday and opened up about the controversy between her son and Vice President Mike Pence, who is in South Korea for the Winter Olympics, over his views on LGBTQ rights.

Speaking with CNN host Chris Cuomo, Rippon's mother Kelly Rippon addressed reports that claimed her son "refused" to meet with Pence, who reportedly wanted to speak with the athlete over his criticisms on the vice president's views on LGBTQ rights. Kelly said the skater never refused to meet Pence.

"I believe that you can say it many different ways," she said. "I don't think he ever said 'I refuse to do that,' because that suggests a tone of intolerance and inflexibility.

"He conveyed to whomever, I don't know the individuals, that any kind of communication would have to be done after the competition is over," she added.

Pence reportedly took the skater's criticisms to heart and even tweeted to Adam, who is the first openly gay athlete to represent Team U.S.A. at the Winter Olympics.
