Watch: 'Drag Race' Star Gia Gunn Comes Out as Transgender
"RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 6 contestant Gia Gunn took to Instagram last week to come out to her fans that she is transgender.
The performer made the announcement on Transgender Day of Visibility last Friday, revealing she's "been on hormone replacement therapy for about a year," adding she will now "identify as a female and I am indeed transgender."
"I thought I would dedicate today in the spirit of being visible to share my transition with all of you," Gunn says in the Instagram video. She later speaks directly to her fans and followers:
"..."if you are in transition or struggling with your gender identity, I want to hear from you in the comments and let's be visible."
In a followup post, Gunn thanked her fans for support.
"Just want to thank each and every single one of you who showed me so much support yesterday!" she wrote in a caption for a photo. "Was overwhelming the amount of love & positivity I received on my end. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." She added the hashtags "#girslikeus" ad "#transisbeautiful"
Gunn is the latest "Drag Race" contestant to come out as trans. Season 3 star Carmen Carrera came out as trans in 2012. Performers Sonique, Jiggly Caliente and current Season 9 contestant Peppermint are also trans.
