Tommy Dorfman Hits West Hollywood for First Time Since Coming Out as Trans

Tommy Dorfman came out last week as trans in a lengthy interview with Time Magazine in which she said, "For a year now, I have been privately identifying and living as a woman — a trans woman... Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy."

On Saturday she made his first public appearance since the announcement in West Hollywood, the Daily Mail reports. "The '13 Reasons Why' actress was covered up in a flowing red maxi dress as she departed the members-only San Vicente Bungalows."

She wore a long sleeve, patterned red dress with a draw-string collar, accented with black sandals, and carried a white mesh back with her and accessorized with a black Fendi handbag and angular tortoiseshell sunglasses.

Speculation rose about Dorfman's trans identity when she was seen late in June with actor Lucas Hedges wearing a dress in New York City.

In the Time interview, Dorfman explained why she kept her name: 'I'm named after my mom's brother who passed a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying."

As for her decision to come out, she said: "This is an evolution of Tommy. I'm becoming more Tommy... I am actually myself."

Dorfman went on the explain: "I've been living in this other version of coming out where I don't feel safe enough to talk about it, so I just do it. But I recognize that transitioning is beautiful. Why not let the world see what that looks like?"

On the hit Netflix show, Dorfman plays the recurring candidate Ryan Shaver, who publishes another student's journal in a school newspaper without her consent.
