Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) has baselessly claimed that transgender children who play sports pose a "deliberate, sadistic effort" to "harm girls," Pink News reports.

Lee, who has long advocated against both women's and LGBTQ rights — opposing reproductive healthcare and same-sex marriage, among other stances — is part of a group of Republican lawmakers behind the "Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act," which would halt federal funding to schools that allow trans girls to participate "in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls."

Without providing evidence or specific examples, Lee's comments to Deseret News were riddled in conspiracy theories. Transgender girls, Lee asserts, might pursue what he believes are cisgender girls' sports to "win a prize or a trophy or scholarship" or "just to prove that they can or for bragging rights"; and, turning more sinister, claims that "others still might do it in a deliberate, sadistic effort to harm girls and women."

This isn't particularly surprising, given that Lee has advocated for the federal government to stop enforcing LGBTQ anti-discrimination laws so that conservative religious people can discriminate without impunity under the guise of religious liberty.

Lee has also opposed abortion, seeking to ban the procedure after 20 weeks except in cases of rape or incest and advocating for pulling federal funds from healthcare providers that provide women with reproductive healthcare.
