Known for outrageous and unique performances, the late local drag performer Phatima Rude (Leigh Pankonin) will be remembered at a gathering on Sunday, August 1 at Public Works.

Compared to — and inspired by — the late Leigh Bowery, Rude's costumes and performances were more than mere drag, but a transcendent eccentric journey, often involving shocking body manipulation and themes with a dark edge.

Pankonin, also known as Sister Phatima la Dyke Van Dick/Sister Hateful Sow of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, died May 18 while sleeping in their Portland, Oregon apartment. They were 55. (See the B.A.R.'s May 20 obituary).

Family and friends, Kevin Sniecinski and Paul King, Raya Light, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and Kochina Rude are organizing the event.

Other speakers and performers will include Peaches Christ, Empress Juanita MORE!, Emperor David Glamamore, Krylon Superstar, Sister Roma, Matt Flynn, Moira Scar, with live performances by Zania Morgan and The Vivid, and Puta, Suppositori Spelling, Hallow Eve, Abortia Klinik, Noveli, and Trixxie Carr.

Doors open at 6pm. Ceremonies take place from 7pm to 10pm. Public Works, 161 Erie St. at Mission. Donations of $15-$20 will cover the cost of event expenses.

This will be a vaccinated and masked event. Temperature checks and masks will be provided.
