President-elect Joe Biden has added a transgender military veteran to his transition team, the New York Daily News reports.

Shawn Skelly, a naval veteran, will serve the incoming president as part of the transition team at the Department of Defense, the article said. Skelly "previously worked in the Obama administration in multiple defense and transportation roles, and became the first transgender veteran to be appointed by a president in 2013," the New York Daily News recalled.

Skelly served in the Obama administration as "Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics at the Department of Defense," the news story went on to say, "then as the Director of the Office of the Executive Secretariat at the Department of Transportation," according to her LinkedIn account.

Skelly is a "a co-founder of LGBT+ advocacy organization Out In National Security," notes Pink News.

Skelly's role will be to help with "evaluating the Department of Defense, understanding how it operates and helping ensure a smooth transfer of power," the Pink News article added.

Media outlets contrasted Biden's addition of Skelly, as well as other LGBTQ individuals, to his transition team with Donald Trump's ban on openly transgender military service members. "The ban is still being battled in court, but Biden has signaled that he plans to overturn the executive order after he's sworn in as president on Jan. 20," noted the New York Daily News.
