An out Republican running for a Massachusetts congressional seat is calling on an elected member of the Republican State Committee to resign after she said she was "sickened" that the candidate and his husband have adopted children, the Boston Globe reports.

"Jeffrey Sossa-Paquette, a Republican candidate running for a Second Congressional District seat who along with his husband, Julian, has two adopted children, said he was shocked at the vitriol from Deborah Martell, who represents Ludlow on the 80-member state committee," writes the Globe. Sossa-Paquette had received the email from a fellow Republican. He later corresponded with Martell directly.

"I heard he was a 'married' homosexual man, who adopted children. I was sickened to hear this," Martell wrote in a May 15 e-mail to fellow Republicans, which was obtained by the Globe. Sossa-Paquette confronted Martell after receiving a copy of the e-mail and told her he was going to go public with it.

"I am a Catholic who loves God and His Ten Commandments. I wish the best for every person in the world, including you!" Martell wrote back to Sossa-Paquette on May 19, according to an e-mail reviewed by the Globe. "What sickened me was that you adopted children. . . . Children deserve a mom and a dad. That's how God designed marriage and the family."

"Martell did not return calls or e-mails seeking comment," adds the Boston Globe. "The state committee is the party's governing body, which organizes party conventions and sets its bylaws."
