Snickers is saying sorry to fans of its candy bars in Spain after airing a blatantly homophobic ad, reported The Guardian.

The controversial ad in question sees Spanish influencer Aless Gibaja order a "sexy orange juice" in a stereotypically high effeminate voice. But after eating a Snickers, Gibaja transforms into a bearded man with a deep one. The commercial then declares "You're not yourself when you're hungry."

After the 20-second spot was condemned as being overtly homophobic, Snickers apologized and said there had been a misunderstanding. But the intent of the commercial seems crystal clear.

"The State Federation of Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals was among those to condemn it, saying that it was 'shameful and unfortunate that there are companies that continue to perpetuate stereotypes and promote homophobia' in a tweet," reports Guardian. After pulling the ad, the company apologized for any "misunderstanding that may have been caused."

Spain's minister for equality, Irene Montero, released a statement also condemning the ad, saying: "I wonder who would think it is a good idea to use homophobia as a business strategy," she openly pondered on Twitter.

Frankly, Snickers would, and this isn't the first time the company had landed in hot water over a homophobic advertising spot. In 2007, a Super Bowl ad showing football players reacting badly to two men kissing was condemed as antigay and fueling homophobic.

With tensions at an all time high in Spain after several, very public, homophobic attacks in the country, the Snickers should be mindful now more than ever about the impact of homophobia, tweeted the far-left party Podemos in Spanish.

"In the face of a wave of LGBTI-phobia, including attacks and even murders, Snickers can't think of a better idea than to create a trashy commercial that tells you that you are not yourself if you are effeminate," it said on Twitter.

See the commercial below, but be warned that is completely cringeworthy.
