Hold the Hate: Door Dash Driver Arrested after Homophobic Slurs
A DoorDash delivery driver in Sandwich, Massachusetts has been charged after scrawling harassing comments on the wrapping paper of a Subway sandwich order he delivered to a gay couple, Newsweek reports.
Matthew Butchard, 27, was placed under arrest Sept. 17 for "allegedly drawing a penis and the words, 'Todd + Steve = gay f**s' onto the sandwich paper before leaving it in their driveway," the article said.
"Local police were tipped off about Butchard's alleged crimes by a Snapchat video which showed him arriving at Todd Hermann and Steven James' home" and then leaving the harassing message.
Local newspaper The Enterprise reported that a second man, "Colin Brady, 25, of Sandwich was a participant but he was not charged."
Newsweek reported that an anonymous "female tipster...sent the video on September 16 to the Sandwich Police Department." The tipster told police that Butchard had been "terrorizing the town," the article added.
The incident was not the first time the couple and their 20-year-old son had experienced harassment from Butchard, reports said. The 20-year-old "told police he believes Mr. Butchard targets the family because of their same-sex relationship" and had posted harassing comments about the family on social media.
"The family told police that in an earlier incident, Mr. Butchard allegedly damaged their mailbox and threatened to come back and spray-paint their cars," The Enterprise said.
"Prior to this incident, Butchard has been arrested for marijuana possession, theft, and drug sales," Newsweek said. "In a 'caution' note on a police report, Butchard was described as possessing a 'defiant and anti-authority demeanor.'"
Newsweek added that Butchard "lives with his parents in East Sandwich, Massachusetts." He faces charges of "criminal harassment, civil rights violation, and property damage to intimidate," The Enterprise article said.
